Salary: £32,600 to £37,768
Closing Date: Wednesday 20 April 2016

Details and application link: https://hr-jobs.lancs.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=A1462

This position will be part of the newly funded PETRAS research Hub grouping nine leading UK universities (UCL, Imperial, Warwick, Oxford, Lancaster, Surrey, Edinburgh, Southampton and Cardiff) and over 47 partners from Industry and Government to explore issues of Privacy, Ethics, Trust, Reliability, Acceptability and Security for the Internet of Things (see https://www.epsrc.ac.uk/newsevents/news/iotresearchhub/ for further details). The position offers the opportunity to network and collaborate across the breadth of the PETRAS consortium, contribute to Hub workshops and events and to benefit from initiatives such as mentoring and secondments to industry where appropriate.

This specific post is part of the Security and Safety theme within the Hub jointly led by Imperial College London and Lancaster University. The post will be based within Lancaster University’s institution-wide research centre, Security Lancaster, one of the UK’s 13 Academic Centres of Excellence in Cyber Security Research.

We are looking for candidates inspired by socio-technical issues underpinning security and safety considerations in IoT. You will have a demonstrated track record in tackling security challenges in cyber-physical systems, in general, and/or IoT in particular. You will be interested in exploring the security behaviours, actions and assumptions of designers and developers of IoT software and systems; and investigating how these interplay with safety considerations in complex settings such as intelligent traffic management and industrial infrastructures. We will consider designers and developers in a broad sense – ranging from professionals through to hobbyists. It is expected that such investigation will be done both through analysis of designer and developer assumptions that may be implicit in existing systems currently in deployment as well as studies of their security behaviours and actions in experimental settings. Further you will be expected to interact with, and draw evidence from, other IoT hub projects in relation to security and safety in IoT. This is a challenging role that offers significant growth potential for the right candidate.

You will join a thriving inter-disciplinary community of 100 researchers within Security Lancaster, tackling current and future challenges to the security and resilience of individuals, organisations, infrastructures and society-at-large. The Centre and the School of Computing and Communications (where the post-holder will be based) both offer a highly inclusive and stimulating environment for research career development. There is a strong expectation that the post-holder will actively contribute to the strong profile of the Centre and its inter-disciplinary ethos through participation in the development and publication of research results.

The post is available from 15 May 2016 with an end date of 28 February 2019.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Professor Awais Rashid, Director of Security Lancaster and co-lead of the Security and Safety theme within PETRAS, email: [log in to unmask] or telephone +44 1524 510316.

We welcome applications from people in all diversity groups.
