Progress in HCI: How Should We Be Measuring Success?

Time: Wed. 4th April, 14.30

Organisers:

Steve Whittaker, ATT-Labs Research
Jean Scholtz, DARPA
Bonnie Nardi, Agilent Labs
Marian Williams, University of Massachusetts at Lowell

This SIG will discuss a fundamental necessity for the process of
research in the HCI
community -- a common research focus. Without such a focus, it is
difficult to build
on previous work, to compare different interaction techniques
objectively, and
to make progress in developing theory. These problems at the research
level have
implications for practice, too; as researchers we often are unable to
give principled
design advice to builders of new systems. All this has important
implications both at
the community level where we are often unclear whether we are making
progress
on important problems, and at the funding level, where funding bodies
are unclear about
the overall contribution of the proposed research.

The aims of the SIG will be:

-- to bring together people with a common interest in this important
problem.
-- attempt to characterise the problem
-- discuss potential solutions to the problem
