Call for participation (EXTENDED DEADLINE!)
Design of relevant novel scenarios: applications to foster mobile
communities Workshop

at the 2nd International Conference on Communities and Technologies
13-16 June 2005 Milan, Italy http://www.cct2005.disco.unimib.it/index.asp

Motivations and Goals
Ubiquitous communication scenarios are increasingly frequent. With wireless
communication network standards and the rising adaptation toward nomadic
life styles, communication between individuals, groups and communities now
occur over networks and devices that are most suitable for the location,
time, and environment of individuals.
People choose methods of communication with capabilities that best meet a
specific circumstance. As a result of so many choices offered to mobile
communities to communicate, eclectic devices (PC's, laptops, i-TV, mobile
phones, PDA's, tablets, Public Digital Displays, etc) and applications (such
as, email, chat, instant messaging, SMS, MMS, etc) have emerged.
This technological convergence of communication devices places HCI issues in
the space where web and mobile interfaces intersect. Use scenarios and
interface design should also converge and address how the user experiences
between these mediums can fuse avoiding incompatibility issues.
With the convergence of these technologies, however, it is possible for
users to take, edit, send, and post photos on the internet and/or via i-TV,
(and vice versa) through one single continuous process with one single
device. In this context, the challenge is to design interfaces that take
into account continuous user experiences across mediums.
At the same time, digital content will drastically change evolving from
simple authoring, editing, displaying and proofing environments to "smart"
content that is interactive, clustered, predictive, contextual, proximity
sensitive, and accessible on the move.
Therefore, to express all the potentiality of new interactive systems within
these new scenarios of pervasive communication, and, more specifically in
the case of pervasive entertainment, content will need to evolve towards new
forms including virtual objects, multi-user environments and immersive,
animated modes. It will become smart, automated, multi-channel,
multi-format, flexible, affective, cost-effective, device-independent and
context dependent.

The workshop provides attendees with a discussion platform for:
	exploring wireless technology development and potentialities
and its intersections with internet and i-TV technologies;
	reflecting around how mobile communities can be enhanced and
fostered in new pervasive communication scenarios;
	outlining metadata and its possibilities to improve
context-aware information, service and device discovery for mobile
communities in future networks;
	analysing how nomadic culture is affecting (and can affect
in the future) our everyday life;
	overviewing applications for mobile communities in
ubiquitous contexts and a discussion on why they require specific design
approaches (analysis of the situations of use);
	appreciating why context-sensitive services provide an added
value to the performance of communities in wireless communication;
	examining different adaptive interfaces that can be
implemented on applications in a multi-platform environment;
	investigating how user-centred design principles can be
applied to wireless applications (mainly for leisure and entertainment) to
find appropriate interaction models;
	understanding how privacy is regulated by law and must be
guaranteed within these context;
	reflecting on the challenges of new forms of content that
express the potentiality of new systems.

Possible topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
	Novel pervasive communication scenarios:
o	Relevant case studies of mobile, i-TV and internet applications for
mobile communities;
o	Scenarios for mobile communities in communication technology
convergence: wireless devices, i-TV and internet based applications;
o	Cultural scenarios for nomadic communities;
o	Visualizing methods and presentation formats;
o	Privacy issues.
	Context sensitive Services:
o	Definition and overview;
	Advanced interaction systems:
o	Affective communication;
o	Multimodal interaction (gesture, voice, etc.)
o	Humanizing interfaces;
o	Haptic interfaces
	New forms of content

Intended Audience
The workshop is intended for managers of HCI projects working in the i-TV,
web and mobile industry (telecom companies, device manufacturers, service
providers, etc.); industrial designer; event organizers; teachers and
researchers in HCI; human factors practitioners; interface evaluators and
testers; and HF academics and students with interests in human computer
interaction and mobile interaction. Although no particular skills are
required, basic knowledge of HCI design issues is recommended.

Organization
Due to the interactive format of some sections of the workshop, a group no
bigger than 30 participants will be suitable to positively share knowledge
and experiences. The workshop is a one-day relevant theoretical input with
demonstrations, practical activities (tests and experience sessions) and
group discussion.

Submission details
Participants will be asked to submit a brief position paper (of max 4 A4
pages), or a reference to a mobile product in which they have been involved
(same length). Participants will be selected on the basis of their interest
in and familiarity with the topic.
Position papers should be sent to: [log in to unmask]
Position paper submission: April 22
Notification of acceptance: April 29
