Call for Workshop Participation
“Full-body Technologies, Playful Interaction & Children with Special Needs:
A Wealth of Potential”
A  pre-conference full-day workshop on June 24, 2013

The ACM IDC (Interaction Design and Children) conference is the major
multidisciplinary international forum where to discuss children's needs in
relationship to interactive technology and present the most innovative
research in the field of interaction design for children.
        Within IDC 2013, the goal of this full-day workshop is to discuss
how to design for full-body playful solutions for children with special
needs, and to examine how to make design decisions and evaluations grounded
in experience and theoretical frameworks.

        We will bring together researchers from a wide spectrum of
disciplines - psychologists, therapists, educators, medical personnel,
experts in special needs, as well as engineers, programmers, computer
scientists. interaction designers for children, whose work address children
with special needs or full bodied interaction, or are interested in
exploring the challenges of this field.

Topics
Position papers should address the design, use, and evaluation of
full-body, or embodied or motion-based interactive technologies for
children with special needs. Within this broad area, the main topics that
will be covered include (but are not limited to):
•       Learning Requirements of children with learning needs
•       Design methods for children with special needs
•       Applying theories to design and evaluation
•       Best practices
•       Evaluation and impact assessment
•       Designing for children with multiple impairments
•       Designing for mixed abilities
•       Individualizing approaches and other methods to address individual
differences
•       Complying with regulations and guidelines
•       Involving adults (educators, teachers, therapists, parents)
•       Remote support to education and therapy

Submissions
Position papers should be in ACM publication format, must not exceed four
pages, and should be emailed as a PDF file to Simos Retalis [[log in to unmask]]
by the 25th of March 2013.
The position papers will be reviewed based on quality of the contribution.
 Acceptance of notification will be by the 19th of April 2013.
        At least one author of each accepted position paper must attend the
workshop and all participants must register for the workshop and for the
ACM IDC 2013 conference.
        Authors of the best position papers will be invited to submit an
extended version of their work to a special issue on “Full-body
Technologies, Playful Interaction & Children with Special Needs “ of the
Elsevier International Journal of  Child-Computer Interaction.
