NordiCHI 2006

First announcement and call for participation (all categories)

The Fourth Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction

"Changing Roles"

Oslo Congress Center "Folkets Hus"
Oslo, Norway, October 14-18, 2006

http://www.nordichi.org/2006

NordiCHI is the main Nordic forum for human-computer interaction research. NordiCHI is the meeting place for researchers from
academia and industry, designers, practitioners, educators and others from a broad range of traditions and communities.
	NordiCHI is a biannual conference which has earlier been held in Stockholm (2000), Århus (2002) and Tampere (2004).
	NordiCHI 2006 accepts contributions in several categories. The technical program is the backbone of the conference, inviting
original, high-quality long and short papers, tutorials and workshops, aesthetic artefacts, and interactive events to generate and
sustain interactive cooperation among the conference participants, and to stimulate dissemination of new results.
	Traditionally, Nordic perspectives on HCI emphasise topics such as: technology in use, integration of design and use, user
participation in design, exploratory design activities, and inter-disciplinary approaches to HCI. This tradition originates in the
Nordic openness to new approaches and divergent ideas in the development of new concepts and practices for the future. Architecture,
pedagogy, political action, fine arts, industrial design, dada; the potential list is endless and ought to be growing when
information technology is diversified and pervades still wider parts of our lives.
	The main theme for the conference is “Changing roles”. We currently see a reshaping of almost every aspect of society, which
is caused by the forces of globalization and new technology. Do we need to change our roles as developers, researchers and
designers? How can we maintain focus on the user in this ever changing environment? Will the role of HCI change?

Long papers
============
NordiCHI 2006 invites original, innovative and exploratory papers meeting the highest international standards. We welcome papers
attempting to move the field of HCI forward, promoting new techniques, methods, tools and theories. NordiCHI aims to be
multidisciplinary forum for exchange of the latest results, coming from and combining the social, the technical, the aesthetic, etc.
	Full papers must report original work, which has not been previously published. The contribution should be made clear in the
paper and in its abstract. Papers making one clear, significant contribution are more likely to be accepted than papers making
several lesser contributions. The paper must identify and cite published work relevant to the paper topic. It should explain how the
presented work has built on previous contributions, and should indicate where and why novel approaches have been adopted.
	Empirical studies of work should stress their relevance to design. Papers should stress their contribution to concepts and
theories in HCI. Papers addressing novel techniques and technologies should clearly identify the relevance and importance to HCI.
	NordiCHI 2006 is an international conference and contributions are welcomed from all parts of the world. However, the
official written and spoken language of the conference is English.
	Submissions must be complete. Papers may be up to 10 pages formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI Publications Format.
Submission should be made electronically in PDF format through the conference paper submission and reviewing system. See
http://www.nordichi.org/2006 for publication format templates and submission details. Please direct questions regarding long papers

HCI as a specifically Nordic field of research and practice. Please email suggestions to [log in to unmask]

Deadline for panel/session proposals: April 3, 2006.

Workshops
==========
Workshops offer an informal environment for focused group discussion around work in progress or new areas of research and practice.
NordiCHI 2006 invites workshop proposals in old and new topics related to HCI.
	If you are interested in organising a full or half-day workshop, please email a short proposal (up to 1000 words) to
[log in to unmask]

The proposal should detail:

	- Title and duration
	- Expected number, balance and selection of participants
	- Workshop theme and goals
- Outcomes of the workshop
	- Relevance to the field
	- Intended audience
	- Description of activities planned
	- Needed facilities
	- Organisers' names and backgrounds

Deadline for workshop proposals: April 3, 2006.

Tutorials
==========
Tutorials offer participants the opportunity to learn about specific concepts, methods and techniques from recognised experts.
Tutorials may be for half-day or full day sessions. NordiCHI 2006 invites tutorials experimenting with new forms of instruction,
innovative perspectives and the use of new disciplines in a HCI context.

Proposals for full or half-day tutorials should detail:

	- Title and duration
	- Intended audience
	- Theme and goals
	- Description of activities planned
	- Prior experiences and evaluations of the tutorial.
	- Needed facilities
	- Organisers' names and backgrounds

	In general, NordiCHI 2006 will cover reasonable travel and housing expenses and registration fee for one instructor per
tutorial; provided that enough participants sign up.

Tutorial proposals should be emailed to [log in to unmask]

Deadline for tutorial proposals: April 3, 2006.

Short papers and posters
=========================
Short papers and posters may address any of the areas identified in the conference topics. Submissions should report original work
that has not been published previously. Authors are encouraged to demonstrate work in progress and late-breaking research results
that show the latest innovative ideas. We invite presentation of ongoing work and preliminary results, by experienced academics as
well as young researchers.
	Short papers must report original work, which has not been previously published. The contribution should be made clear in
the paper and in its abstract. Papers making one clear, significant contribution are more likely to be accepted than papers making
several lesser contributions. The paper must identify and cite published work relevant to the paper topic. It should explain how the
presented work has built on previous contributions, and should indicate where and why novel approaches have been adopted.
	Short papers are presented in one of two ways 1) plenary session for 10 minutes, 2) poster in a dedicated poster session.
NordiCHI 2006's emphasis on direct interaction and networking makes a poster presentation attractive for certain short submissions,
such as design cases, organizational overviews, and late breaking work-in-progress. The short paper committee decides on the plenary
/ poster distribution presentation ratio for the accepted short papers.
	Submissions must be complete. Short papers may be up to 4 pages formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI Publications Format.
Submission should be made electronically in PDF format through the conference paper submission and reviewing system. See
http://www.nordichi.org/2006 for publication format templates and submission details. Please direct questions regarding short papers
and posters to [log in to unmask]

Electronic submission deadline for short papers: July 3, 2006.

Interactive Events / Demonstrations
====================================
Interactive events give participants the possibility of showing and viewing new, interesting, and novel ideas in human-computer
interaction concepts and technology. An interactive event proposal is composed of two parts:

1) A short description of the system, max 2 pages, conforming to the NordiCHI 2006 short paper format. To be printed in the
proceedings if accepted.

2) A one-page interaction plan, describing how the working system is going to be used at the conference, including spatial and other
requirements. Demo presentations are given in two formats: a) as a presentation in the interactive events session (supplementing
presentation of underlying concepts), and b) as a continuous running presentation (for hands-on interaction in breaks, during poster
session, etc.).

The short paper and the interaction plan should be submitted via the conference paper submission and reviewing system (See
http://www.nordichi.org/2006 for publication format templates and submission details). The program committee will review the
submissions.
	Please observe that the presenters must supply all equipment necessary for the interactive event. Internet access will be
available, but presenters must contact the organizers about this. Shipment of equipment is under the responsibility of the
presenters.
	The system will be presented during the interactive event session at the conference and the short description of the
interactive event will be published in the conference proceedings.
	Please direct questions regarding interactive events/demos to [log in to unmask]

Electronic submission deadline for interactive events: July 3, 2006.

Aesthetic artefacts
====================
NordiCHI 2006 encourages "aesthetic artefacts" and follows the trend that started with NordiCHI 2002, promoting aesthetic artefacts
as a submission category for experiments into how artistic expression and praxis affect perspectives on interfaces, contexts and
design.
	Traditional functionalism fails in relation to many new computer interfaces as well as the interaction between humans and
computers. At the same time, traditional application areas may benefit from the inspiration from how digital forms are articulated
in artistic expression. For example, digital arts challenge the way we understand the computer, and the relation between form and
contents at the interface.
	Examples of possible artefacts are (but not limited to): interactive artworks, computer games, interactive installations,
net art, software art, artistic interfaces, aesthetic experiments with HCI-related issues. Accepted aesthetic artefacts will be
exhibited at the conference in conjunction with the interactive event session. An aesthetic artefact submission is composed of three
parts:

1) A short description of the artefact, max 2 pages, conforming to the NordiCHI 2006 short paper format. To be printed in the
proceedings if accepted.

2) An exhibition plan, describing how the artefact is going to be exhibited, including any spatial requirements it has (one page).

3) (Optional) a film of the artefact or the performance with it up to 15 minutes long, and may be submitted in formats including
DVI, MPEG, AVI, and QuickTime. Large files should be produced in DVD and sent by regular mail.

The short paper and the exhibition plan should be submitted through the conference paper submission and reviewing system, whereas
the optional film or artefact should be submitted by email (film) to [log in to unmask] or by ordinary mail (DVD) in three copies. See
http://www.nordichi.org/2006 for publication format templates and submission details.
	Submissions will be reviewed by the program committee and supplemented by an aesthetic artefacts special committee of
artists and aesthetics scholars. Aesthetic criteria as well as an assessment of contribution to the ongoing understanding of
human-computer interaction are taken into account.
	Please observe that the presenters must supply all equipment necessary for the exhibition. Wireless Internet accesses will
be available. A limited number of stationary computers will be provided. Please direct questions regarding aesthetic artefacts to
[log in to unmask]

Electronic submission deadline for aesthetic artefacts: July 3, 2006.

Industrial experience reports
==============================
NordiCHI is a meeting place for academia and industry. To enable HCI practitioners to report on cases of best practice, we introduce
a new submission category “Industrial experience reports”. We encourage submissions reporting from ongoing or recent software
development projects concerning all aspects of the human-computer interaction. Examples include: usability evaluation methods,
software tools, interface design, software solutions, user involvement, market analysis and field studies. The focus of industrial
experience submissions should be to report on actual everyday applications of HCI tools, methods and techniques. Such reports give
important feedback to academia, and give fellow practitioners an opportunity to learn about best practice in the field.
	This submission category permits practitioners to present work without having to comply with the academic requirements of
the main conference such as comprehensive references to previous work, research question etc. The contributions will be evaluated
mainly for their practical value to fellow practitioners and for their value as case studies.
	Submissions must be complete. Industrial experience reports may be up to 8 pages formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI
Publications Format. Submission should be made electronically in PDF format through the conference paper submission and reviewing
system. See http://www.nordichi.org/2006 for publication format templates and submission details. Please direct questions regarding
industrial experience reports to [log in to unmask]

Electronic submission deadline for Industrial experience reports: July 3, 2006 .

Proceedings
===========
Printed proceedings will be available at the conference to ensure optimal interaction around the presented works.
	Part of the proceedings will be included in the ACM digital library to ensure optimal distribution of the peer-reviewed
papers after the conference. Long papers and short papers will be part of the proceedings and the ACM digital library. Short papers
for Demos (Interactive events) will be part of proceedings only.

Electronic submission and format
=================================
Submissions of papers, short papers, interactive events and aesthetic artefacts should be made electronically through the conference
submission and reviewing system. Submission of workshops, tutorial and panels should be sent directly to the corresponding chairs.
The submissions should be formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI Publications Format. See http://www.nordichi.org/2006 for
publication format templates and submission details.

Doctoral colloquium (October 14-15, 2006) =========================================
Graduate students within different areas of human-computer interaction are invited to take part in the Doctoral Colloquium at
NordiCHI 2006. This will be the place where lively and useful discussions enable students to receive suggestions about their
on-going research and allow more experienced participants to encounter some fresh ideas and view some of the new trends in the
field.
	The Doctoral Colloquium provides an opportunity for doctoral students to discuss their research both with other students and
with leading experts within the field. The colloquium will take the form of a workshop where established HCI scholars take active
part as discussants. The purpose is for students to receive constructive feedback on their thesis work so far, get advice about
future developments, and share ideas and experiences with students in related areas.
	Participants should have advanced beyond the introductory stage in their thesis work, and be actively engaged in the
exploration of an HCI topic. The research areas covered by the DC are the same as the NordiCHI conference generally. Students may
come from different academic subjects or disciplines, such as interaction design, computer science, cognitive science, and
sociology.
	To apply, please submit a proposal of at most 3 pages, including abstract and references. Also, a short biographical note
describing the applicant's background should be enclosed. The proposal should include a description of the research problem, the
theoretical background and approach chosen, and the work performed so far. The proposals will be evaluated by a review committee.
Approximately 8 participants will be selected to give a short presentation of their research topic, followed by a discussion within
the group of students and experts.
	Submissions should be sent by email to [log in to unmask], preferably in PDF format.

Deadline for applications: May 1, 2006.
