Please join my in congratulating our field’s very own Bill Thies of Microsoft Research - India, who was just recognized as a MacArthur Fellow.

Bill changes the world for the better. And the MacArthur Fellowship honors that.

For those of you who don’t (yet) know him, Bill creates communication and digital technologies to advance the social and economic well-being of low-income communities in the so-called “developing world”. Among many other things, his work has:

— helped combat drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis by ensuring patients take all of their medication - even after they begin to feel better.

— enabled citizen journalism among physically and socially isolated tribal communities,

— created a cloud-based open-source tool that allows mobile phone users to participate in social media

— improved online education in India.

His work has gone from innovation/invention all the way through implementation and evaluation and is making real a difference in the lives of rural Indians.

More information here:

Bill joins 2 other SIGCHI MacArthur Fellows, Luis von Ahn (2006) and Shwetak Patel (2011)

SIGCHI has much to celebrate! Thank you all for your contributions - to SIGCHI and to the world!
