HUC2K: THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON HANDHELD AND UBIQUITOUS
COMPUTING - KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND EVENTS

Hosted by HP Research Laboratories, Bristol UK
25-27 September 2000

Personal, handheld and wearable technologies, coupled with ubiquitous
environment-based technologies, will transform our access to
information and computing. Artefacts in the physical world will
become computationally accessible, and our everyday environment will
become a powerful ubiquitous computing interface.

The Second International Symposium on Handheld and Ubiquitous
Computing (huc2k) will again bring together researchers and
practitioners to explore the links and synergies between personal and
environment-based technologies.

The technical symposium programme (see http://www.huc2k.org) includes
contributions from leading researchers in academia and industry from
Australia, China, Finland, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden, UK,and US.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
The symposium has now confirmed its keynote speakers. They are:

Tim Kindberg, HP Laboratories, US
David May FRS, Bristol University, UK
Jakub Wejchert, The European Commission

EVENTS: MONDAY
Following the end of Monday's technical programme, HUC2k will hold an
evening event in HP Labs. There will be a buffet and informal
demonstrations followed by a talk by the Australian-based performance
artist stelarc, whose work explores and extends the concept of the
body and its relationship with technology through human/machine
interfaces incorporating the Internet and Web, sound, music, video
and computers.

EVENTS: TUESDAY
The huc2k symposium dinner will be held at Thornbury Castle, north of
Bristol. The Castle was established in 1510 when Edward Stafford, 3rd
Duke of Buckingham, received a licence from Henry VIII to build his
Castle at Thornbury. Work started in 1511, but when ten years later
the Duke was accused of treason and executed on Tower Hill, his lands
were confiscated and the Castle was appropriated by Henry VIII who
retained it as a Royal Demesne for 33 years. Mary Tudor lived at the
Castle for some years, returning the Castle to the descendants of the
Duke when she became Queen. Thornbury Castle now stands surrounded by
its vineyards, gardens and high walls, with views over the Severn
into Gloucestershire and Wales.
