Workshop: Visual communication environments to support group
collaboration
ACM GROUP 2007: Sanibel Island, Florida, USA, November 4 - 7, 2007

-= Description =-

Intense collaboration usually involves synchronous, often time-
critical and tightly coupled activities. People collaborating in
these environments are often co-located because supporting intense
collaboration between distributed persons is very challenging. Large
meetings require acute and timely coordination as well as efficient
technology applications to maintain individual and group engagement.
With falling prices for videoconferencing and digital video
equipment, a growing array of web services for online video, and
higher bandwidth available to offices and homes in both urban and
rural areas, visual communication over the Internet or another
broadband network is increasingly accessible to support intense group
collaboration.

In this workshop we will explore the technology as well as the
theories and methods for understanding how to effectively support
intense collaboration between large numbers of people in different
locations. We want to build a cross-disciplinary community of
researchers and practitioners in academia and industry to foster
collaboration and for the coordination of future research efforts.
The workshop addresses two linked research directions within the area
of remote collaboration. First, we would like to discuss new
concepts, tools, research approaches and results from studies that
will enable us to gain insight into this type of collaboration and
associated research challenges. The second research focus is visual
communication, which is a crucial element of collaboration. We would
first like to identify the state of the art in synchronous,
asynchronous and combined visual communication environments to
support group collaboration.

Topics of interests include:
* Intense group collaboration using large displays, locally or remotely.
* Human factors associated with large displays used for collaboration.
* User interface and cognitive demands in visual communication
environments.
* Synchronous, asynchronous and combined modes of visual
communication technologies.
* Meeting design and facilitation for visual communication environments.
* Social and cultural aspects of visual communication environments.
* Research methodologies for measuring and assessing group and
individual participation and collaboration in visual communication
environments.
* Theory for understanding group collaboration including visual
communication theory, group dynamics and audience research.

-= Proposals =-

Potential participants are asked to submit a position paper (2 pages)
that will be judged on its relevance to the topic. All workshop
submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least three members of the
advisory board and a maximum of 15 papers will be selected. Submitted
papers must follow the ACM proceedings format (http://www.acm.org/
sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html).

First, we are looking for CSCW and HCI researchers who have worked in
domains characterized by (intense) collaboration over distance.
Ideally the participants are making contributions to the support of
distributed intense collaboration through field studies, experimental
or evaluative approaches, tool design, or are themselves involved in
intense collaboration.

Furthermore, we seek participants with a broad range of expertise
with social sciences, human-computer interaction, video collaborative
systems, and video conferencing systems. The workshop will
additionally be pertinent to designers or developers who are
interested in adding a visual component to their work. We hope to
attract participants from both industry and academia.

The position papers will be assembled and distributed to attendees
before the conference, with the expectation that readers will read
and comment on them before arrival. The workshop will be organized in
two parts: the morning will consist of short presentations (10
minutes), followed in the afternoon by break out groups focused on
specific themes and a plenary.

-= Deadlines =-

Deadline for submissions is September 15th. We will screen
submissions for quality and relevance to the workshop. Announcements
of acceptance will be sent on October 1st. The workshop will be held
on Sunday, November 4, 2007.
