The International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction will devote a
special issue to
Consumer Products Design.
The editor of this special issue is Dr. Philip Hodgson of Motorola Inc., USA
The focus of this issue will be on consumer product design in the real world
and will concentrate on user-interaction design for next generation
microprocessor-based "smart products", rather than on the user-interface
concerns of traditional desktop applications. Of particular interest are:
1) Product-specific user-interface issues including, but not limited
to, hand-helds, wearables, telematics, domestic products, toys and games
etc. in the arena of business, commerce, communications, sport and leisure,
education, medicine and health etc.
2) new data input and output methods and paradigms
3) new and innovative methods in user-needs assessment and analysis
4) design principles and strategies that have improved the market
success of a consumer product
5) new and innovative evaluation/benchmarking techniques for consumer
6) theoretical models of human-consumer product interaction
7) visionary papers that anticipate changes and developments into the
Papers may describe new products or product-concepts and the user-interface
challenges encountered or anticipated, and their resolution. They may be
design-oriented papers that identify issues and solutions for hardware- and
software-interfaces; or they may be field studies; original technical
papers; position papers surveying the field; papers describing the frontiers
of user-interface design principles; research methods and the application of
research findings to the consumer products design lifecycle.
Research-oriented papers will describe findings that have a real world
impact on consumer product design. A uniting theme will be the design of the
interaction between humans and new, smart, consumer products.
Manuscripts are accepted for consideration with the understanding that they
represent original, previously unpublished material, and that they are not
being considered for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts should be in
12-point type, using double-spaced pages for all text, including references.
