EXTENDED DEADLINE TO NOVEMBER 12

WHAT: The SIGCHI project Listening to Arabs, Africans and Spanish Speaking Latin Americans or LAASSLA is a SIGCHI effort to reach out to HCI people in places where HCI is still in its infancy. Growing out of the HCI Across Borders (HCIxB) activities that SIGCHI has sponsored and/or been involved in, this project consists of several regional meetings led by SIGCHI EC members to discuss the future of HCI and SIGCHI in Arab, Sub-Saharan African, and Latin American regions.

We realize that there are many communities that are also developing and we do want to hear from you all. This particular project is focused on two large geographies because we have to start somewhere. We hope we will be able to learn from other HCI communities in the future. Of course, your ideas are always welcome, so please feel free to contact Susan Dray (email below)

FORMAT OF MEETINGS: These sessions will be very interactive with round table discussion and other activities to spark discussions about barriers and challenges people in the region face as they try to institutionalize HCI in these regions and how SIGCHI might be able to help support community development. This is not a conference.

WHO: In each region, we will select 10 DELEGATES.

Funds will be provided for delegates from eligible countries [see list at http://www.acm.org/membership/special-member-rates-developing-countries <http://www.acm.org/membership/special-member-rates-developing-countries> for a list) to attend.

WHERE: We are delighted to announce that our first meeting will be in the beautiful Mediterranean city of Alexandria, Egypt to listen to delegates from Arab countries. Our local host is the City for Scientific Research and Technological Applications (SRTA-City).

WHEN: 15th and 16th of January, 2018.

HOW: HCI researchers, educators, post-graduate students, practitioners, consultants, and all others doing HCI/UX activities from Arab countries are invited to fill out the online application before NOVEMBER 12, 2017 https://goo.gl/forms/lmd8nZSldZcJS0v12 <https://goo.gl/forms/lmd8nZSldZcJS0v12> Applications must be completed in English. The meetings will also be conducted in English.

BECAUSE THERE HAS BEEN SOME CONFUSION AS TO WHETHER THIS IS A CONFERENCE OR NOT, WE HAVE DECIDED TO EXTEND THE DEADLINE FOR A WEEK TO ALLOW PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT AWARE OF THIS TO APPLY.

Accepted applicants will be notified by NOVEMBER 20, 2017.

Please note: Participants will be reimbursed by ACM AFTER the meeting.
