             DESIGNING INTERACTIVE SYSTEMS: PROCESSES, PRACTICES,
                            METHODS, AND TECHNIQUES

Sponsored by ACM SIGCHI in co-operation with IFIP WG 13.2

                               18-20 August 1997

In 1995 the first DIS set out to address designing as a coherent
activity -- technical, cognitive, social, organisational, and
cultural. The goal was to come to a better understanding of
how designing works in practice and how we can improve it -- by
broad-based empirical observations, by formulating theories and
perspectives, by developing methods and techniques, and adopting
effective practices.

For DIS 97 these ambitions remain the same. DIS 97 will provide
a forum to discuss the process of designing interactive systems
grounded in experiences of real design practice. We want to bring
together professional designers, who want to report and reflect
on their design practices, and researchers in the fields of
design processes, methods and techniques to see how design practice
can be improved. The focus of the conference is on designing
in the domain of interactive systems, which covers a broad range of
artefacts, but perspectives and insights from other design domains
are encouraged.

The conference will be a single-track program providing common
ground among the variety of participants. The primary activity
will be discussion, not presentation, based on real-world
design practice as illustrated by the submissions. Our aim is to
create a definitive report which draws on this discussion, to be
distributed after the conference for the benefit of the field.
