held in conjunction with Euro-Par 2012, Rhodes Island, Greece, August
28th, 2012

Keynote Speech
Speaker: Prof. Domenico Talia, University of Calabria and ICAR-CNR, Italy

Venue: HiBB 2012 Workshop - In conjunction with Euro-Par 2012, Rhodes
Island, Greece

Date: August 28th, 2012

Title: Using Clouds for Scalable Knowledge Discovery Applications

Abstract: Cloud platforms provide scalable processing and data storage and
access services that can be effectively exploited for implementing
high-performance knowledge discovery systems and applications. This talk
discusses the use of Clouds for the development of distributed data mining
applications. Service-oriented knowledge discovery concepts are introduced
and a framework for composing data mining workflows on Clouds, is
presented. The system architecture, its implementation, and current work
aimed at supporting the design and execution of knowledge discovery
applications modeled as workflows are presented.

Biosketch: Domenico Talia is a professor of computer engineering at the
University of Calabria, and the director of the Institute of High
Performance Computing and Networking of the Italian National Research
Council (ICAR-CNR). He received his Laurea degree in physics from the
University of Calabria. His research interests include Grid and Cloud
computing, distributed knowledge discovery, parallel data mining, and
peer-to-peer systems. Talia has co-authored and edited 8 books and about
300 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He is a
member of the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Computers, the
Future Generation Computer Systems journal, the International Journal on
Web and Grid Services, the Scalable Computing: Practice and Experience
journal, the Journal of Cloud Computing, the MultiAgent and Grid Systems
journal, International Journal of Biomedical Data Mining, and the Web
Intelligence and Agent Systems journal.
