Dear colleagues,

In 2007, SIGCHI celebrated its 25th anniversary, and Ben Shneiderman
celebrated his 60th birthday. The editors of the International Journal
of Human-Computer Interaction (IJHCI) asked us to assemble a special
issue celebrating his accomplishments. Today the University of Maryland
and IJHCI posted press releases regarding the special issue.

Press releases:
   UMd: http://www.newsdesk.umd.edu/scitech/release.cfm?articleID=1587

   IJHCI:
http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/pdf/announcements/HIHC_pr_08.pdf
Special issue: http://www.leaonline.com/toc/ijhc/23/3
Ben's webpage: http://www.cs.umd.edu/~ben/

The special issue covers four domains in which Ben has had a major
influence during his career, spanning his earliest to most recent work.
These articles represent the longevity of Ben's impact on many
researchers, while presenting new work in those four areas.
We hope you will enjoy reading those papers.

Catherine Plaisant and Chris North

PS: Chris North is a PhD alumnus of Ben, now Associate Professor at
Virginia Tech, and Catherine Plaisant is Associate Research Scientist at
the University of Maryland and has been a close collaborator of Ben for
many years.

About the papers:

The first article is "Find What You Need, Understand What You Find" by
Gary Marchionini and Ryen W. White. This article uses an
information-seeking framework to examine current progress toward the
goal of effective and usable search systems, highlighting several
important recent results.

Two articles present information visualization techniques that support
discovery. The first article is titled "Twenty Years of Four HCI
Conferences: A Visual Exploration," by Nathalie Henry, Howard Goodell,
Niklas Elmqvist, and Jean-Daniel Fekete. It presents a wide-angle view
of the HCI literature using information visualization tools. In
contrast, the second article, "Exploratory Data Analysis with
Categorical Variables: An Improved Rank-by-Feature Framework and a Case
Study" by Jinwook Seo and Heather Gordish-Dressman, presents a detailed
description of a new visualization technique and its use in biological
research.

The fourth article is "Capture, Annotate, Browse, Find, Share: Novel
Interfaces for Personal Photo Management" by Hyunmo Kang, Benjamin B.
and Bongwon Suh. This article summarizes a broad vision for photo
management.

The last article is "HCI and Social Issues: A Framework for Engagement"
by Harry Hochheiser and Jonathan Lazar. This article examines the
fundamental social concerns that arise in HCI and the roles that HCI
professionals can play in addressing them. This forward looking
framework addresses a broad array of HCI social issues that Shneiderman
has championed.
