Fourteenth International ACM SIGACCESS Conference on Computers and Accessibility
October 22-24, 2012
Boulder, Colorado, USA

http://www.sigaccess.org/assets12/

CALL FOR PAPERS

The ASSETS conference explores the design, evaluation, and use of computing and information technologies to benefit people with disabilities and older adults. ASSETS is the premier forum for presenting innovative research on mainstream and specialized assistive technologies, accessible computing, and assistive applications of computer, network, and information technologies.

ASSETS is sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and its SIGACCESS Special Interest Group on Accessible Computing. The single track and friendly atmosphere make ASSETS the ideal venue to meet researchers, practitioners, developers and policymakers to exchange ideas, share information and make new contacts.

Topics
------
High quality, original submissions on topics relevant to computers and accessibility are invited. This includes the use of technology by and in support of:

* Individuals with hearing, sight and other sensory impairments
* Individuals with motor impairments
* Individuals with memory, learning and cognitive impairments
* Individuals with multiple impairments
* Older adults with diverse capabilities
* Professionals who work with these populations

Submissions should present novel ideas, designs, techniques, systems, tools, evaluations, scientific investigations, methodologies, social issues or policy issues relating to:
* Assistive technologies that improve day-to-day life
* Assistive technologies that improve access to mainstream Computer and Information Technologies
* Innovative use of mainstream technologies to overcome access barriers
* Accessibility and usability of mainstream technologies
* Identification of barriers to technology access that are not addressed by existing research

Where relevant, work that includes empirical data from the target user group is strongly preferred. ASSETS strives to publish research that carefully addresses the issues involved when individuals with disabilities interact with information technologies. In general, this means that empirical studies should include participants that are representative of the intended users of the system being studied. This does not mean that all participants must be representative of the intended users, but it does mean that some individuals fitting this description should be included in an appropriate way in the data collection process. In some cases, articles may be accepted for publication if representative users are not included in studies, but only if a sufficiently compelling argument is presented as to why it is appropriate or necessary to use non-representative users and any implications of this decision are adequately addressed. Authors should refer to the General Writing Guidelines for Technology and People with Disabilities (http://www.sigaccess.org/community/writing_guidelines/) when preparing submissions.

Submission Procedures
---------------------
ASSETS accepts submissions in the following categories:

* Technical papers
* Posters
* Demonstrations
* Student research competition
* Doctoral consortium

All contributions are peer-reviewed by an international Program Committee. Accepted papers, posters and demonstrations will be archived in the ACM digital library. At least one author of accepted submissions must register as the presenter by the early registration deadline. Submissions MUST contain substantial original, unpublished material. Please refer to the ACM policy on plagiarism (http://www.acm.org/pubs/plagiarism%20policy.html) for guidance.

Important Dates
---------------
* Requesting mentors: March 2, 2012, Friday
* Technical paper submission: May 4, 2012, Friday
* Notification of technical paper acceptance: June 15, 2012, Friday
* Posters and demos submission: June 29, 2012, Friday
* Doctoral consortium submission: June 29, 2012, Friday
* Student research competition submission: June 29, 2012, Friday
* Notification of posters and demos acceptance: July 25, 2012, Wednesday
* Notification of doctoral consortium acceptance: July 25, 2012, Wednesday
* Notification of student research competition acceptance: July 25, 2012, Wednesday

All deadlines are at midnight HAST (GMT-10:00) on the specified day.

Technical Papers
----------------
Accepted technical papers will be presented at the conference and will appear in the conference proceedings.
Select authors will be invited to submit extended versions to a special issue of the ACM Transactions on Accessible Computing (TACCESS).
Authors who have never published at ASSETS can request a mentor. Mentors will be experienced ASSETS contributors, who can help authors to improve their submissions. See the mentor program page for more information.
Papers must be a maximum of 8 pages long, in the ACM conference format (http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html). Papers that do not follow the submission guidelines will be returned without review. They should be submitted electronically via the conference web site no later than May 4, 2012.

Posters and Demonstrations
--------------------------
Posters and demonstration proposals should be submitted using the ACM conference format (http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html), and they are limited in length to 2 pages. Proposals will be reviewed, and accepted proposals will be included in the conference proceedings. Submissions (in PDF format) must be made electronically via the conference web site no later than June 29, 2012.

Doctoral Consortium
-------------------
The ASSETS 2012 Doctoral Consortium (DC) will provide a forum for doctoral students to present their research plans, receive feedback from senior researchers, and promote contacts among students working in similar areas. Students submitting to the DC should have a clear topic and research approach, and made some progress, but should not be so far along that they cannot make changes. The DC is ideal for students seeking feedback from senior researchers; students who wish to present completed research or participate in a research competition should submit their work to the main conference or to the Student Research Competition. DC papers will appear in a special issue of the SIGACCESS newsletter. Submissions will be due June 29, 2012.

Student Research Competition
----------------------------
The ACM Student Research Competition (SRC) is an event open to undergraduate and graduate students, interested in presenting their research to a panel of experts. Students wishing to participate submit abstracts of their work. Qualifying research must deal with topics that are relevant to the mission of the ASSETS series, as described by the call-for-papers. Preference will be given to work that has been completed (or close to completion); the same work cannot be presented at more than one of the conference venues (SRC, DC, or as a regular technical paper). Selected students will receive partial support from ACM to attend the conference. At the conference, entrants will display a poster and make a brief presentation to a panel of judges. A small number of semifinalists will be chosen by the judges to present their work in a conference session, and of those up to three students will be designated finalists by the judges, receive cash prizes and award certificates from the ACM, and a chance to compete in the SRC Grand Finals, whose winners will be recognized at the Annual ACM Awards Banquet.

ACM SIGACCESS Best Paper Awards
-----------------
The following awards will be made at ASSETS 2012:

* SIGACCESS Best Paper Award (chosen from the technical program)
* SIGACCESS Best Student Paper Award (chosen from the technical program)

The selection process for SIGACCESS Best Paper Award and SIGACCESS Best Student Paper Award will be carried out by members of the program committee based on the technical paper review process. Papers to be considered for the SIGACCESS Best Student Paper Award, must have the name of the student as first author and must be indicated as such on submission. Awardees will be presented with a certificate from ACM during the conference.
