"USER-CENTERED DESIGN WORKS"

A Multimedia Toolbox for HCI Professionals

The government of the Netherlands funds HCI research in universities
and institutes through its "Innovation-Oriented Program on Human-
Machine Interaction" (short: IOP Human-Machine Interaction; see
http://www.senter.nl/iopmmi). The key objectives of this program are:

1. Generating basic knowledge on human-machine interaction, to meet
the demand for HCI innovation in industry. On the basis of priorities
set by the program committee, research projects are currently being
carried out on various aspects of User-Centered Design; Multimodal
Interaction; and Navigation, Orientation and Situational Awareness.

2. Establishing a network of HCI professionals. This is done in close
cooperation with SIGCHI.NL, the Dutch chapter of ACM SIGCHI. Among
other things, this has resulted in the design of a Who-is-Who database of all
HCI professionals in the Netherlands, accessible through the SIGCHI.NL
website (http://www.sigchi.nl).

3. Disseminating the acquired knowledge. This is the task of the
IOP's Working Group Knowledge Transfer (WGKT). It is the topic of
this posting.

In order to strengthen the position of UCD in industry, the WGKT has
developed a tool for HCI professionals in the form of a multimedia CD
entitled "User-Centered Design Works" (short: "UCD Works"). This CD is
intended to help HCI professionals to create or improve the
appreciation of user-centered design, usability engineering and
usability testing within their own organization or that of their
clients.

UCD Works is designed as a collection of presentation slides,
accessed via a simple navigation interface, which cover the following
topics:

- Theory of product design, product improvement, UCD versus
marketing, and the role of the user in requirements analysis and
product evaluation

- Principles and benefits of UCD

- Testimonials from officers of several large corporations

- Case stories illustrating the value (including the return on
investment) of UCD in the design of software applications, web sites,
complex systems and consumer products

- HCI resources: an overview of relevant journals, societies, web
sites and conferences

The CD is richly illustrated with diagrams, animated graphics and
video clips. It can be operated in two modes. The primary mode is as a
presentation aid, i.e. a tool for HCI professionals who use the
material to create presentations for managers, colleagues or clients.
However, the CD can also be run in 'self view' mode by an individual
operating the program. In this mode, the screens show extensive text
rather than bulleted statements. In both modes, it is assumed that the user
has an understanding of UCD principles. All slides are in
English.

UCD Works is available free of charge to HCI professionals. The
international launch will take place during the CHI 2002 conference
in Minneapolis, USA, April 20-25, 2002. The CD will be on display
continuously in a corner of the Noldus Information Technology booth
in the exhibition area. Staff will be present to provide additional
information. Conference delegates who are interested in using the CD
can request a copy by filling in a form.

We hope that UCD Works is welcomed by the HCI community and we look
forward to hearing the feedback of the users!
