Hi,
This document by UIE provides excellent guidance and addresses some of your
questions:
http://www.uie.com/reports/recruiting_without_fear/
I've done a fair amount of informal recruiting, and it can be time
consuming. But if you are doing repeated waves of testing, then setting up
the structure for intake and screening will pay off.
I can't speak to the rates per hour in the US, but they will vary depending
on how tight your criteria (e.g. professionals, specific demographic, etc.).
I think your planned "testing" time may be too low (depending on what you
are testing). Note: you've got equal amount of time for interviewing as
"testing". Don't under estimate the importance of watching them use your
product. In my experience that's more useful than what they say about it.
best of luck...

Subject: Recruiting test subjects without an agency.
Hello fellow CHI WEBer's.
I am about to start a monthly usability testing program with five
subjects coming in to our office every month here in San Francisco.
Am I crazy to think that I can just post an ad in Craigslist with my
given criteria, and pass that through my HR person (who has agreed to do
the screening)?
Am I underestimating the time required to do this?
Also, I am planning on having them come in for an hour for $50. 10-15
minutes for pre test interview, 20-30min for the testing, and 10-15
minutes post test interview.
Is that fair market value for their troubles?
Thanks so much for your help. I, of course, will summarize for the
group.
