From my own experience and research, a linear wizard works better, i.e., one step, one page, assuming a step is defined as a group of related information.

I agree that showing the user their progress through the wizard is a must. The user may want to complete the wizard, but may not have the time to commit to it. Nothing would frustrate a user more than starting a wizard they expected to be able to complete quickly and then find they can't (unless you obviate that by allowing them to save the their input and return later to complete it.

I don't mean to hijack, but what is the maximum number of steps you would recommend in an online wizard?Thank you,Greg HerzhauserNew York State Insurance [log in to unmask] Message-----From: ACM SIGCHI WWW Human Factors (Open Discussion) [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Mario Chiesa | ISMBSent: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 11:52 AMTo: [log in to unmask]: R: Step n of mIf it's 2) you should use a very clear and informative visualization aboutwhere you are in the wizard (especially about how many steps you still needto finish it, no matter if at first or second level, they're all steps): itcould be very disappointing to think you're moving at the last step and onlythen 'discover' you still need three 'second level' stepsIf it's 1) maybe it can be simplerBr,.marioMario Chiesa | Istituto Superiore Mario Boellavia P.C. Each step is one page and each page is one step. Benefit: Clarity -- click NEXT and get to the next step.2. Make the steps be at a higher level, and each step could be spread out over two pages. For example, the "Setup" step includes logging in to your account, downloading software and installing it -- maybe it's just neater (conceptually and/or visually) to break that up. Benefits: Simpler pages, and it looks like fewer steps when you see "Step n of m".I just ran a study where one person was vocal about wanting one step/one page. I don't think it mattered much to the others. Other observations?thanks	-- hs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Hal ShubinInteraction Design, Inc.617 489 6595www.user.com -------------------------------------------------------------- Tip of the Day: Postings must be in plain text CHI-WEB: www.sigchi.org/web POSTINGS: mailto:[log in to unmask] MODERATORS: mailto:[log in to unmask] SUBSCRIPTION CHANGES & FAQ: www.sigchi.org/web/faq.html -------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------- Tip of the Day: Postings must be in plain text CHI-WEB: www.sigchi.org/web POSTINGS: mailto:[log in to unmask] MODERATORS: mailto:[log in to unmask] SUBSCRIPTION CHANGES & FAQ: www.sigchi.org/web/faq.html --------------------------------------------------------------______________________________________________________________________This e-mail transmission contains confidential information that is the property of the sender.
