Won't it be a considered as a "nested menu". Anyway, I
agree with you, the underlying theme is "give a quick
reference to user about their location in a website".
It is upto the visual designer to present it in a
usable fashion.

If space is the contraint, use of abbrevaited words,
decreased font size will help ( if the underlying
theme is maintained).
