Sandeep;

Since you mean a welcome screen upon login, as you're indicating it
includes the username, it's a system response to let the user know they
have successfully logged in. If a user successfully completes a task in
any given system and there is no system response indicating so, it's not
much better than poor or no system responses when a task has not
successfully been completed.

Assuming the application in question has an authenticated and
non-authenticated state, something indicating which state the user is in
becomes important. Now, this can also be accomplished via something like
a small text welcome message with the username in an unobtrusive upper
corner on the UI, and making this link to profile or personal settings.

I don't know if this particular case needs specific research to support
it, as system responses are a pretty standard usability issue.

Welcome message with user name on web application

Hello,

Why do we need to show welcome message on the application UI?

This was the question I faced today while discussing the product user
interface with my product manager, which made me realize that I did not
have a very good answer for it, as I have never tried to find out why and
kept using it on all my designs as it was seen on other applications too.
Can someone point to some research or guidelines on why to use the welcome

message with user name for web based applications?

Thanks
Sandeep Rathod
