Postdoctoral position in private machine learning for transport systems

The application form can be found here: http://bit.ly/Chalmers2019
The application deadline: 7 October, 2019

Information about the department

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has about 70 faculty members and enrolls about 90 Ph.D. students from more than 30 countries. The research spans the whole spectrum, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. There is an extensive national and international collaboration with academia and industry all around the world.

Information about the research groups

The Networks and Systems division at Chalmers University of Technology consists of 9 faculty, 4 postdoctoral and 12 doctoral researchers. The division is active in a wide range of research topics in the fields of systems security, distributed computing, networked systems, parallel and multicore computing, data streaming, and cyber-physical systems. In addition, the division contributes to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of ICT, transportation, energy, e-science, and built environment. The group is running several national and international projects in collaboration with both academia and industry. This project is based on interdisciplinary collaboration between Chalmers' division of Networks and Systems Division and Chalmers' division of Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering.

Major responsibilities

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will join the Networks and Systems division and work at the intersection of security, distributed systems, and machine learning. The research will focus on seeking to develop privacy-protected manipulation-resilient ML solutions. The main aims of the project are: (i) to provide privacy protection methods for ML algorithms that access privacy-sensitive information, (ii) to develop groundwork needed for ML algorithms running over large-scale fault-tolerant distributed systems, (iii) for a variety of problems and privacy protection methods, conduct a theoretical analysis on the possible ML algorithms and (iv) to conduct practical case studies on which privacy protection tools can match the ML algorithms.

In this two years position, your major responsibility as a postdoctoral researcher is to pursue research in collaboration with Ph.D. students and faculty, towards the above project aims. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also includes opportunities to enhance your teaching skill, such as assisting with the co-supervision of degree-projects (both at Bachelor and Master levels) and giving guest lectures in courses as well as assisting organizing workshops, or performing other duties corresponding to no more than 20 percent of working hours. The position is intended to start before the end of December 2019.

Position summary

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years.

Qualifications

Applicants should have an outstanding record of research, especially appreciating the value of combining foundational/analytical aspects and engineering practice. To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering or in a related discipline. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written, are needed.

The ideal candidate for the position has a strong background in security/privacy, machine learning, fault-tolerant distributed computing and networked systems, including both algorithmic aspects and programming and system development. Scientific excellence in at least one of these areas is very important. Further experience with interdisciplinary projects or background in mathematics and/or hands-on development of distributed systems is helpful. You may apply even if you have not completed your degree but expect to do so before the position starts. Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite for applying since English is our working language for research. Both Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses. Our researchers and Ph.D. students in the department come from more than 30 different countries.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
