EPFL seeks postdoc researchers in the area of distributed systems from Jan 2020 in the lab led by Prof. Anne-Marie Kermarrec.

Machine learning is applied today in a wide range of applications from self-driving cars to recommenders. While many works in the area have focused on improving the quality of machine learning algorithms, we believe that efficient ML goes with revisiting system issues with respect to storage, computation, distribution, failure resilience and privacy. The selected postdoc researcher will work towards the design and implementation of efficient distributed systems for ML in collaboration with PhD students and international collaborators.

The Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of 16,000 people, including over 10,000 students and 3,500 researchers from 120 different countries.

Before joining EPFL, Anne-Marie Kermarrec was a senior researcher at Inria, France where she led a research group on large-scale distributed systems from 2006 to 2015. From 2015 to 2019, she was the CEO of the Mediego startup that she founded. Mediego provides content personalisation services for online publishers. She has been with Vrije Universiteit, NL and Microsoft Research Cambridge, UK. Her research interests are in large-scale distributed systems, peer to peer networks and system support for machine learning.
