ACM Transactions on Computing Education
Special Issue on Capstones and Projects in Computing Education

Abstract Submission Deadline: January 15, 2017
Full Paper Submission Deadline: April 1, 2017

We are pleased to announce a Special Issue on Capstones and Projects in
Computing Education that will be published by the ACM Transactions on
Computing Education (TOCE) in 2018.  ACM TOCE covers diverse aspects of
computing education by publishing papers with a scholarly approach to
teaching and learning, a broad appeal to educational practitioners, and a
clear connection to student learning. This special issue focuses on
capstone projects, major design experiences, and large projects in
computing education.  It will include a collection of papers that explore
the creation, implementation, and empirical examination of large-scale
projects in computing education at all levels - from K-12 through graduate
programs.  The goal of the issue is to advance the body of knowledge
regarding empirically-investigated, best practices in capstone and project
design.
We call for practitioners and researchers to submit manuscripts that
effectively present and evaluate any and all aspects regarding the design,
implementation, and evaluation of capstone and large-scale projects in
computing education.  We expect accepted papers to include both a
theoretical foundation and empirically validated results. Potential topics
situated specifically in the context of computing education projects and
capstones include, but are not limited to:
* How to manage capstones and large projects in the face of rising
enrollments
* Capstones to satisfy learning outcomes related to “soft skills”
* Novel use of projects in computer science education contexts
* Empirical results demonstrating efficacy of project and capstone courses
* Software engineering skills for large scale projects
* Industrial sponsored projects and working with industrial partners
* Long running or multi-semester projects
* Multi-disciplinary projects and working with other disciplines
* Legal and ethical issues
* Handling interpersonal complexities for project teams
* Evaluating contribution and participation in team projects
* Working with not-for-profit organizations
* Contributing to open-source projects


Important Dates

Extended abstracts (up to 1000 words): January 15, 2017
Decisions on abstracts: February 1, 2017
Full papers due: April 1, 2017
Notification of Acceptance: August 1, 2017
Revised manuscripts due: October 1, 2017
Special issue published: January, 2018

Journal Format as found at
http://www.acm.org/publications/acm-word-style-guide.  Use this style for
extended abstracts as well as the full paper if your abstract is accepted.
