Dear colleagues
I’d like to announce a new book written by me and entitled “Essentials of computing systems”, published by UMinho-Editora.
It is a free e-book, that was written as a textbook for Computer Science and Software Engineering courses.

The book was written to have a relatively small number of pages (less than 100). The rationale is to be able to approach the topics in a sufficiently complete way, without going into details that are too specific and, to a certain extent, unnecessary, and that do not contribute to the understanding of the essential concepts. This relatively small number of pages makes it possible to believe that many students will read the full book, contrary to what happens with much more complete books.

It can be accessed at the following DOI: https://doi.org/10.21814/uminho.ed.33
Best regards,
   jmf

Computers were invented to “compute“, i.e., to solve all sort of mathematical problems. A computer system contains hardware and systems software that work together to run software applications. The underlying concepts that support the construction of a computer are relatively stable. In fact, (almost) all computer systems have a similar organization, i.e., their hardware and software components are arranged in hierarchical layers (or levels) and perform similar functions. This book is written for programmers and software engineers who want to understand how the components of a computer work and how they affect the correctness and performance of their programs.
