It is a bit over a month ago that the Committee on Computing Education in Liberal Arts Colleges hosted our SIGCSE event - we are thrilled that so many of you were able to join us in a virtual format. If you were unable to attend, our event site has been updated with slides and session notes, under the "Resulting Materials" section: https://computing-in-the-liberal-arts.github.io/SIGCSE2021-PreSymposium-Event/

Following the event, we solicited feedback including suggestions on future activities for the Committee and members of our current working groups met to discuss this feedback and plan next steps. So now we want to let our broader committee membership know what we are planning and open the doors to others who would like to get involved.

First up, for those of you interested in connecting with others from the liberal arts computing education community, we launched a Slack space with channels for things like curriculum, assessment, grading, and faculty mentoring/recruiting/hiring. We're hoping this may complement this mailing list as a place for discussion. You can join in using the following invitation link: https://join.slack.com/t/sigcse-libarts-comm/shared_invite/zt-p85kd2o1-tniDN0o2w7UrSljeUi2_ig

We're currently planning for two events over the next twelve months:
* We look forward to hosting another affiliated event at SIGCSE 2022. Planning for that would take place later in the summer, and we are interested in finding additional ways to connect people from this community during the Technical Symposium, so we may also want to propose a BoF on one or more topics of interest. We're also hoping that a TS slack channel could be used for chat about sessions of particular interest to those in liberal arts computing or to help people meet up.
* In late July/early August, we're planning to hold an online unconference (see http://unconference.net/) where participants can gather for a day in smaller and more sustained groups than were possible at our affiliated event to work on developing content or ideas on topics of their choice. We expect this may be a good way for those interested in projects like developing a CS+X course framework or revising syllabi to incorporate contract grading, etc. to collaborate. Work from this event may also feed into our subsequent SIGCSE proposals.

For both of these events, calls for participation will be sent to this mailing list, but if you would be interested in helping organize and run these events, you can reply to this email and let us know.

Members of our existing working groups (Curricular Models, CS+X, and Mentoring, Recruiting, and Hiring) are also working on drafting articles to disseminate the information from our events more widely. We hope this will both be useful for members of this community who are unable to attend an event and also as an outreach effort to those outside the liberal arts and those outside the CS education community. The members of the Mentoring, Recruiting, and Hiring working group are also considering if a pilot mentoring program can be started for job candidates who are considering positions at liberal arts CS institutions. We will share more information about these projects as it is available.

If you have ideas about any of these planned activities, thoughts on additional projects the committee should be considering, or want to get involved, let us know. We're excited about the growth of this group and look forward to continuing to connect with you all throughout the coming year!

On behalf of the Committee,
Amanda
