Subject: Which language should I use

I wonder if anyone out there can advise me...I want to develop a
software package for a friend of mine who runs a Karaoke. The
programme should be able to work on a laptop (either Mac or Win) and
would contain all the songs and be able to play them for gigs. This
means it would have to be able to output CD-G (sound and graphics) to
external monitors & sound system, and at the same time display an
operating environment on the users screen. The programme would also
act as a database from which reports can be generated, i.e. printing
of song books etc.

I am new to this sort of programming, although I am keen to learn. I
have a background in Dynamic web development using ColdFusion with
Oracle, and this initially led me to think that some sort of interface
with a MySQL database might work. However this programme isn't really
a web application, so I think I should develop it using something like
VB or C++ or Java. If anyone out there could point me in the right
direction it would save me going in the wrong direction and learning
something that turns out not to be up to the task.

Any advice gratefully received
