This email is to give a short information about two strategic
EU projects, in which involvement of users is wished and welcome.
Both are projects that work towards the electronic information
society with the goal to support social life and learning with
computer technology.

Project Select

The Select project helps scientific, technical, or professional
Internet users to get and find the most reliable, valuable,
important, and interesting information and to avoid trash and
information overload.

Select develops a protocol that stores quality evaluations of
WWW pages, newsnet news, and other Internet information. This
bases on ratings kept in a ratings databse, and intelligent agents
guiding the user through information sorted by quality.

The project is in its requirements gathering phase and has first
prototypes available, the project will deliver results in 2000.

For the moment the project would like to hear your opinion
on what the system should support and thus please, if
it is convenient for you, connect to

and complete the questionnaire. If you actively insert your ideas
this new Internet protocol will hopefully serve you best.

Project CREDIT

The CREDIT system will support competency based assessment of
knowledge and skills and will provide advice on further training
To support these functions five different tool components have
been considered which communicate with each other based on standard
Internet protocols and defined data interfaces. The five components
A hierarchical structure of definition of skills and sub-skills
A function to support in the selection of a proper set of skills
A function to support in the evaluation of skills and check of
  evidence of skills
A function to support in the identification of a learning route
for a participant to achieve a certain profession or job.
A function to support in the identification of suitable learning
material and courses to follow a recommended learning route and
  work on skill gaps

Prototype tools will be available at the end of 1999, and for 2000
we search for companies that would like to field test such a system.

Further information can be found at
