After Robert Eachus praised the Amiga and Mike Feldman the Mac, I see an
interesting parallel:

Mac comes out with a machine and O.S. that makes the then Windows look
like crap.

About the same time, Amiga comes out with a machine and O.S. much better
than Mac in every respect except display resolution. (And you can buy
your way out of that.)

Due to lousy marketing, Amiga goes out of business three times, but the
fans keep up CPR for years.

Eventually Mac catches up (almost) to the Amiga but by then, Mac is in so
much trouble they make a deal with the big guy, whose best-seller still
hasn't caught up with Mac or Amiga, but nobody who doesn't already have a
Mac or Amiga can't be convinced of that.

In case you are wondering, I still have Amiga's first model, with only
768K memory and no hard drive. I wanted something better, but couldn't
afford a newer Amiga until too late--company's dead (or in so much trouble
I don't want to risk it). I thought the newer Macs were the next best
thing, and when MachTen and Codebuilder came out, I finally decided that
was the way to go--especially with the rumors that MacOS 8 would be a
variant of NeXT Unix. Then Jobs made his deal with Gates and once again
I'm faced with choosing between the garbage (Windoze), a good product with
very doubtful future (MacOS + MachTen) or some excellent products that
require more personal admin time than I can afford (Linux).
