3.11a1 builds OK with gcc 2.8.1 (I had some problems to start with,
but I think this was down to finger trouble).

However, people using Linux 2.0.x should beware; these kernels are not
happy with gcc-2.8!! you need to keep a 2.7.2(.x) compiler around to
do kernel rebuilds. And it had better be on a different path than
gcc-2.8, cos the 'make dep' phase doesn't seem to respect your setting
of CC ..
