We are carrying out a research survey in the UK of project manager's
views on various aspects of usability (see attachment). We would be
interested in some comparative data from elsewhere, particularly in the
US (but are unable to offer the champagne). If you fit the criteria and
would be willing to participate, please email the completed
questionnaire to my colleague [log in to unmask]

We will be happy to send you a summary of the results.

Many thanks and a Happy 1997

System Concepts are carrying out a research survey into the perceived value
of usable software. If you know of someone who could fill in this
questionnaire, but does not read this news service, please forward this
message to him or her.

We need project managers of UK-based software projects to fill in this
short questionnaire. In return you will be placed in a free draw to win a
bottle of The Wine Society's Champagne (a top-quality, full-flavoured wine
from the small, traditional house of Alfred Gratien in Epernay).

1. Will you have somebody on the project team responsible for
usability? [Y/N]

2. Have you produced a formal statement (a) identifying who is
going to use the system and (b) giving concrete, detailed examples
of what they are going to do with it? [Y/N]

3. Do you intend to create mock-ups on paper or simple prototypes
of critical parts of the system and show these to end users
before any software or hardware is produced? [Y/N]

4. Can you name some people who will be potential users of
the system? [Y/N]

5. Will you test the system using real, complete and
representative tasks? [Y/N]

6. Will you test the system using people whose background knowledge and
expectations approximate those of the system's real users? [Y/N]

7. Will you record people using the system and measure speed
of use and number of errors, and record any problems people
point out? [Y/N]

8. Have you defined usability targets (such as speed to perform
representative tasks, number of errors allowable, measurements of user
satisfaction) that the final system must meet? [Y/N]

9. Are you using a Style Guide to ensure that menus, buttons,
use of colour etc are consistent across the system? [Y/N]

10. Is responsibility for the entire system (eg software,
manuals, training) coordinated and centralised? [Y/N]

11. Will the system be designed so that the user interface
can be easily modified? [Y/N]

12. Do you plan to use the system yourself (ie not just
have it demonstrated to you)? [Y/N]

13. Approximately how many people will use the final system? [ ]

14. Approximately what is the project's budget (in k)? [ ]
