I have long heard that using tables for formatting web pages into columns causes problems for some screen readers because they read the text directly across the page. I am working with a client now that has asked me to look into this, as they say that they have found that sometimes this is a problem and sometimes it isn't. One of the designers says she has found it to read down the left column before proceeding to the right one (clearly, this is what we would like); another says he has found it to read across the screen regardless of table construction. Both of these folks are using JAWS, and we are wondering what other features (browser version or other settings) might come into play here. Any insights into this would be appreciated. (I am familiar with the WAI material on this topic.)
