Awareness, Instant Messaging, and Future Directions John Tang and Jonathan Grudin The popularity of Instant Messaging (IM) is one recent development that could benefit from the research on awareness that the CSCW community has been exploring for over a decade. A number of research and development efforts are providing awareness and IM-like interfaces for keeping abreast of people's activities to facilitate coordination and communication. This Interest Group will provide a chance to become familiar with the range of current work going on in this area, identify what specific areas of interest are emerging among us, and perhaps define some future venues for sharing ideas and driving the findings from our research into products. The Interest Group will meet at CSCW 2000 in Philadelphia on Wednesday, December 6, 11:00-12:30. The format will be determined at the time based on attendance. For further information or suggestions contact us at [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] -- no application necessary, just come to the meeting. The room location will be identified on an Interest Group schedule at the conference registration desk. Information on CSCW 2000: http://www.acm.org/cscw2000/ John and Jonathan
