Here is a sampling of what is happening in the world of CHI Local SIGs:

 Africa

   CHI-SA was chartered on February 13.  It's founding Chair: Jacques Hugo.


 Americas (outside the U.S.)

  Brazil CHI's website now features interviews with CHI experts.  New
  interviews are added periodically.

  CapCHI's next meeting will feature Brian Thompson from Nortel Networks,
  who will present, "XML."  Date: February 27.

  ToRCHI will meet February 27.  Speaker: Steve Easterbrook; presentation:
  "Requirements Engineering: finding out what customers really need."


Asia / Pacific

  Paper submissions and registrations are due in February for Easy 2001,
  India's first conference on software usability.  The conference will be
  presented by CHI South India in March.


 Europe

  SIGCHI.DK: 20 februar, Den politiske informationsarkitekt.
  SIGCHI.dk/Kids: 27 februar, Interaktivt-tv og HCI.

  The founding meeting of SIGCHI Finland will be on February 1st, 2001
  in Tampere, Finland.

  SIGCHI Italy has announced HCITALY'01, the symposium it will be
  sponsoring in September in Florence in conjunction with a conference on
  ergomomics organised by the Italian Association of Ergonomics.

  SwissCHI's next event: February 22: " Automation im Cockpit ­ Change oder
  Gefahr?.


United States

  BayCHI's program February 13 starts with a half hour of viewing the
electronic
  sculptures of Bruce Cannon, drinking tea/coffee, and more, then continues
with
  presentations by Bruce Cannon ("Sculpture as Pure Interface") and Jan
Borchers
  of Stanford ("Groovy Patterns: HCI, Interactive Music Exhibits, and Pattern
  Languages").  BayCHI-East will hold its inaugural event February 28: "The
Goal-
  Directed (R) Method: A Conversation with Alan Cooper."  BayCHI is
sponsoring a
  full-day tutorial by Jeff Johnson: "GUI Bloopers: Recognizing and
Avoiding Common
  GUI Design Mistakes" (February 24).

  Rocky Mountain CHI will be meeting Thursday evening Feb 22nd in
  conjunction with the SUN HCI interest group.  The speaker will be Arnie
Lund,
  who will be stepping through a talk called "Your Future in HCI:
Preparing for
  Research and Practice in the New Century."

  DC_CHI's February meeting is a joint one with the DC's STC Usability SIG,
  and it is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7.  The speaker is Ginny Redish;
  the topic of her talk is "Structuring Your Documents to Maximize Reuse."

  CHI*Atlanta met in late January with a program entitled, "Atlanta's
Technology
  Future: Where Are We Going?"  Speaker: Susan Wells.

  CHI-Squared will be meeting in the Sears Tower for its January meeting on
  the 28th.  The topic will be, "Supporting Children's Science Inquiry Learning
  Using Advanced Visualization Technologies."  Speaker: Tom Moher.

  GB/SIGCHI's next meeting will be the evening of February 13.  Speaker:
  Colin Ware; topic: "Vision Science, Visual Space, and Visualization."

  NYC-CHI will assemble Monday Feburary 12 at Viant for a presentation
  entitled, "Navigating Sound: the catalog of Philip Glass, online."  Speaker:
  Mark Podlaseck.

  CHIFOO's next meeting: February 20.  "Through the Users' Eyes: Using

  Participatory Design to Refine Your Product Definition" will be presented
  by Kristine Maneely.  The CHIFOOD prior to the evening meeting will feature
  pizza and pasta.

  MilwauCHI will meet February 6.  The topic is "Web Accessibility: Creating
  Web Pages that Transform Gracefully."  The presenter will be Shawn Henry of
  Optavia.  (Membership applications for 2001 are due February 15.)
