I tentatively agree with Peter's position (list open to subscribers only). A question for the list administrator, if it is easy to produce such statistics: over, say, the past few months, can you indicate the percentages of posted articles from the following sources: 1) Subscribers to the list 2) Non-subscribers, where the message is relevant to the list charter 3) Spam (presumably from non-subscribers :-) If it turns out that a high percentage is in category 2, then maybe subscriber-only is not a good idea (and then I would vote for "moderated"), but my guess is that most of the messages will be from categories 1 or 3. A potential hassle with subscriber-only lists is that the algorithm for figuring out if a sender is a subscriber is rather fussy; minor differences such as inclusion of subdomain names can trigger rejections/bouncebacks. It would be nice if the list software could separately define "permitted senders" and "recipients". Then a subscriber could provide multiple addresses as "send from" and presumably only one of these as "send to". Another option is to change the name of the list (say "TEAM_ADA" versus "TEAM-ADA") and leave it open to all senders, but I suspect that it is only a matter of time before the spammers track us down and start another deluge. Another option is to close the list and start a newsgroup, say comp.lang.ada.advocacy, but I don't know that there's enough traffic to warrant that.
