BayCHI, The San Francisco Bay Area ACM Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction Presents A Tutorial by Scott Weiss & Rich Martin Designing for Wireless Usability Saturday, March 16, 2002 Santa Clara, CA About the Course Description: As the Wireless platform becomes more popular, it is critical that usability testing, user interface design, and prototyping methods be defined. Wireless products present the challenges of adapting traditional software testing methods to small, networked hand-held devices. This tutorial presents methods for testing wireless web sites, the instructors' results from a recent wireless usability study, prototyping methods for wireless web sites, and group exercises to design improvements to wireless web sites based on the presented usability results. Benefits: Attendees will gain an understanding of the wireless web (WAP) through demonstration and video content from the findings from a usability study of the Sprint PCS Wireless Web. Methods for high fidelity usability testing of wireless handheld devices will be presented. Information architecture strategies for WAP will be presented, along with paper prototyping methods. Attendees will participate in prototyping, redesign, and usability testing activities. The Instructors: Scott Weiss, principal of Usable Products Company, is an Information Architect. He worked in the software industry from 1989 to 1996 designing software and managing software projects. His former employers include Microsoft, Apple, Sybase, and Autodesk. Scott founded the Wireless Roundtable, an ad hoc group focused on usability guidelines for the wireless platform. He has taught for the MFA program at Parsons' School of Digital Design, and is the Chair of the New York New Media Association's Special Interest Group on Design. Richard Martin is an Analyst with Usable Products Company. He was lead analyst for the UPC Wireless Study (Fall 2000), and is also responsible for creating and maintaining the Wireless Lexicon, a dictionary of user-oriented terms for the wireless platform (www.WirelessRoundtable.org). Audience: This full-day tutorial is targeted at beginners with some usability or wireless design experience. Familiarity with usability testing of desktop software and web sites is assumed. Designers, developers, technical writers, and others will benefit from this tutorial.
