Magoulas, Brunel University, UK Timescale Deadline for expression of interest and abstracts submission: July 1, 2003 Feedback to authors: August 1, 2003 Deadline for authors to submit full chapters: October 1, 2003 Introduction As one of the most recent developments in information technology, hypermedia systems have offered a significant contribution to the delivery of e-content through the Internet. However, not all types of users have the capability to develop navigation paths by themselves. Many studies have found that individual differences had significant effects on information seeking in hypermedia systems. Users with different characteristics and backgrounds need different types of content and navigation support. Thus, adaptable and adaptive hypermedia systems have emerged in the last decade. Research community in this area is constantly expanding, and we have reached a point in time where research works have mushroomed and matured. We need a self-contained book to demonstrate the fruit of our research. The Overall Objective of the Book The proposed book aims to provide a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art adaptable and adaptive hypermedia approaches, covering both their theories and applications in areas such as search engines, e-commerce, e-learning, and digital libraries. It will cover many issues in the field, providing insight into analytical and architectural aspects of adaptive web-based systems, as well as applications in real world settings. The Target Audience The book will be useful to professionals and academic researchers working in various areas, such as customisation and personalization, human-computer interaction, multimedia information systems, web-based technology, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and intelligent databases. Moreover, it will provide a source of reference and a guide for students working on relevant projects. Topics of interest may focus on, but are not restricted to: Ø Hypermedia § Human Factors § Metaphors and Navigation § Hypermedia Authoring § User Centered Evaluation Ø Adaptive Hypermedia § Methods and Techniques for Customization and Personalization § User Modeling in Adaptive Hypermedia § Database Technologies in Adaptive Hypermedia § Adaptive Learning Environments § Customization and Personalization in Electronic Commerce § Personalization in Digital Libraries § Personalization in Multimedia Systems § Individualized Search Engines § Evaluation Criteria and Methods § Privacy Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to send on or before July 1, 2003, a completed author form with a 600-800 word manuscript proposal organized in sections as follows: aim, main methodology, results, and significance of the contribution. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by August 1, 2003 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by October 1, 2003. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group, Inc., publisher of the "Idea Group Publishing," "Information Science Publishing," and "IRM Press" imprints in 2004.
