IEEE Pervasive Computing - Call for Papers Special Issue: Rapid Prototyping for Ubiquitous Computing Submission Deadline: 1 May 2005 Call Online at: http://www.computer.org/pervasive/edcal0405.htm Author guidelines: http://www.computer.org/pervasive/author.htm Submission address: http://cs-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com WIP Deadline: See below Publication date: October 2005 Prototyping is a central instrument for research and development in ubiquitous computing. IEEE Pervasive Computing magazine invites articles relating to methods and tools for rapid prototyping of ubiquitous computing systems. We welcome contributions that approach this theme from a number of angles including hardware platforms and support for custom developments, software toolkits and frameworks, architectures and conceptual abstractions, experiments and evaluation based on prototypes, and methods for prototyping. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: * Prototyping for nonprogrammers - prototype customization by end-users - multidisciplinary approaches to prototyping - prototyping tools for designers * Experience - use of prototypes with users beyond the laboratory - value of prototyping compared to simulation - case studies in rapid prototyping for ubiquitous computing - transfer of knowledge from prototypes into products * Evaluation - evaluation of prototypes - prototypes as means for evaluation - approaches for studies and user testing with prototypes * Software support for rapid prototyping for ubicomp - software architectures and patterns - toolkits and frameworks for rapid prototyping - new programming paradigms and languages * Development - conceptual abstractions and methods - software, hardware, systems issues - experience in development (for example, evolution, cyclic development, or multiphase developments) - cost of prototyping for ubiquitous computing * Hardware for rapid prototyping for ubicomp - hardware platforms and systems - use of sensors and actuators in prototypes - tools and building blocks for creating custom prototypes - appropriation of standard platforms for prototyping IEEE Pervasive Computing is interested in a variety of submission types including research papers, project retrospectives, surveys, and tutorials. Research articles should present summaries of new contributions that are significantly different from previously published work. Retrospective articles give a summary of lessons learned for important longer-term projects, synthesizing the results that may have appeared elsewhere. Survey articles provide a comprehensive overview of a critical topic that is relevant to the special issue but not found in any other forum and would be useful to educate the readers of this magazine. Tutorials provide relevant how-to knowledge of some important technology or technique that would inform the readership, again in a way that would not likely be found in any other publication forum. Submissions should be 4,000 to 6,000 words long and should follow the magazine's guidelines on style and presentation. All manuscripts submitted must be original. Articles published (completely or in significant part) in other magazines or journals will not be considered for publication. All submissions will be peer reviewed in accordance with normal practice for scientific publications. Submissions should be received by 1 May 2005 to receive full consideration. In addition to full-length submissions, we also invite work-in-progress submissions of 250 words or less (submit to Shani Murray at [log in to unmask]). These will not be peer-reviewed but will be reviewed by the Department Editor and, if accepted, edited by the staff into a feature for the issue. The deadline for work-in-progress submissions is 1 August 2005.
