COST294-MAUSE Training School 2008 Designing and Evaluating InnoVative Interactive SystEms (DEVISE): Interdisciplinary Trans-sectorial Training http://www.tik.ee.ethz.ch/~law/DEVISE/ ******************************************************************************** VENUE: University Residential Centre of Bertinoro (Forli-Cesena), Italy DATE: 29th June 2008 (Sunday) -- 4th July 2008 (Friday) DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: *15th March 2008* GOAL: The overarching goal of DEVISE is to improve participants' theoretical and practical understanding of emergent design and evaluation methods for interactive software and media, as well as techniques and tools being employed in different IT-enhanced sectors, through exploring differences and commonalities. Reviews of case studies and hands-on exercises will be employed as instruments to realize this goal. Of particular significance is to enlighten young human-computer interaction (HCI) and software engineering (SE) researchers and practitioners through in-depth discussions with their experienced counterparts, enabling them to develop a holistic view of the overlapping fields of SE and HCI. For the detailed description about the background and motivation underlying DEVISE, please click on: http://www.tik.ee.ethz.ch/~law/DEVISE/background/index.shtml EXPECTED OUTCOMES: Participants are expected to: * become familiar with application domains and some specialised design and evaluation methodologies, and to be able to consider their generalisation and specialisation across domains and sectors; * gain knowledge and practical experience in designing and evaluating a range of innovative interactive systems with multiple methods and from multiple disciplinary perspectives; * learn how evaluation studies are devised and executed with respect to domain-specific as well as other contextual resources and constraints; * learn how different design and evaluation methods address and trade off quality attributes deemed significant for innovative interactive systems and development processes, with special emphasis on creativity, automaticity, safety, security, usability, reliability and evolvability; * be inspired by how transdisciplinary approaches derived from biological or social sciences, or from the Arts or Humanities, can be adapted for designing and evaluating innovative interactive systems; SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME http://www.tik.ee.ethz.ch/~law/DEVISE/program/index.shtml PARTICIPANTS & APPLICATION (1) STUDENTS (max. 30) PhD students in HCI and SE, who have a reasonable level of knowledge in general design and evaluation methodologies and are at the first or second year of their doctoral studies, are eligible to apply for the Training School. The following documents are required for application: (i) CV (1-page) (ii) Supporting Statement (including rationale for application, relevant background, list of publications, etc.) [1-2 page] (iii) Recommendation letter from a supervisor (iv) Sources of funding Please send the above four items (preferably in a single pdf file) by e-mail to Effie Law ([log in to unmask]). The format of the filename should be: /your surname/-DEVISE.pdf, e.g., smith-DEVISE.pdf Note that the registration fee for the five-day stay in the residential center for a single person (including all meals and an excursion) will cost about 615EUR. Successful candidates may be granted a scholarship of a range from 300EUR to 400EUR to cover part of the registration fee. However, travel expenses will NOT be funded.
