Using Participants' "Real" Data in Usability Testing: Lessons Learned
Todd Zazelenchuk, Sara Cole, Mark Keavney,
Kari Sortland, and Alex Genov, Intuit

In usability testing, we place great importance on authentic tasks, real
users, and appropriate fidelity of prototypes.  We often place less
importance on the data with which participants interact.  Commonly, test
data are fabricated for participants to imagine as their own.  But
incorporating users' real data can lead to richer and more valid
usability results.

TODD ZAZELENCHUK is a staff user researcher at Intuit.  He has been
designing interfaces and conducting user research for fourteen years.

SARA COLE (formerly Sazegari) is a senior user researcher at Intuit.
She has been conducting user research for fifteen years.

MARK KEAVNEY is a staff user interface designer at Intuit.  He has been
designing interfaces and conducting user research for fifteen years.

KARI SORTLAND is a user experience researcher at Intuit.  She has been
working in the fields of experience design and human factors research
for six years.

ALEX GENOV is a staff experience design researcher with the Consumer Tax
Group of Intuit's TurboTax.  Alex received his degree in Experimental
Social Psychology from Clark University in 2000.
