The Baltimore ACM Chapter invites you to attend the following lecture "Apache Accumulo: Extensions to Google's Bigtable Design" When: 5:00 pm, Thursday, March 29 Where: Murphy Fine Arts Hall, Morgan State University Speaker: Adam Fuchs, National Security Agency Abstract: Keeping up with new mission needs requires a highly adaptive infrastructure to support hundreds of distinct analysis applications and data, while supporting rapid, decentralized development of new applications and new data types. In support of these requirements the NSA Computer and Information Sciences Research Group is using open source data cloud computing components, as well as contributing back one of its own. Apache Accumulo is a flexible, high performance distributed key/value store based on the published Google Bigtable design and built on top of Apache Hadoop. NSA has been developing Accumulo since 2008 and released the source code in 2011. This talk will discuss the motivations behind NSA's efforts as well as key design and performance features of Accumulo, including cell-level access labels and iterators. Cell-level labels provide expressive, fine-grained control over access to data stored in Accumulo, which is essential in a national security setting and may also be useful for organizations who face legal, regulatory, or other data handling restrictions. Iterators are a server-side programming mechanism that can modify key/value pairs at various points in the data management process. They enable new design patterns such as arbitrary aggregation and document-partitioned indexing in Accumulo. Admission is free and open to the public. The talk will be preceded by refreshments and pizza at 4:30 pm. RSVP: If you would like to attend, please email Glenn Speights at [log in to unmask] and indicate whether you'll join us for refreshments or just the lecture.
