The goal of the eighteenth annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Computing, Networking and Services (MobiQuitous 2021) is to provide a forum for presenting and discussing high-quality research in the field, involving international practitioners and researchers from diverse backgrounds. MobiQuitous 2021 will thus foster research collaboration through focused discussions, interaction and exchange of experiences that will designate future research efforts and directions.

IWSST 2021 is a forum to discuss technologies and applications that solve relevant problems in modern society and thus contribute to the evolution of our society into a super-smart society. In a super-smart society, cyberspace (virtual space) and physical space (real space) are interconnected and mutually support each other. To enable such a future society, we need to develop a wide range of smart society technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), big data (data processing and analytics), Internet of Things (IoT), privacy-preserving data handling, robotics (e.g., robot-supported elderly care), etc., low-energy communication, mobility (e.g., self-driving vehicles), healthcare, well-being, disaster response, cyber-physical systems. Therefore, in this workshop, we solicit submissions that contribute new techniques and ideas to enabling the vision of Society 5.0.

The MUSICAL 2021 Fall workshop is a forum to discuss technologies related to future mobile ubiquitous systems, from every possible aspect of information and communication technologies. Since future mobile ubiquitous systems could include a wide range of technologies, including wired and wireless communications, data processing and analytics, mobile and social applications, etc., this workshop accepts all of them to have beneficial discussions related to the upcoming mobile ubiquitous world. Especially we expect graduate students, Ph.D. students, and other young researchers to submit and attend this workshop. The area of mobile ubiquitous technologies is just emerging now and the area requires new fresh ideas from young researchers and students to create a stimulative mobile ubiquitous world. So, the discussion by young researchers on this topic would be very interesting and exciting.

Deep Learning (DL) has recently been widely applied to user modeling for real-world applications such as context-aware recommendation or location-aware services. However, many studies focus on building DL models only in one or few domains and applying them to identical domains. Thus, how to build ubiquitous and multi-domain user models and increase their applicability in real-world contexts remain an open problem. Here, we refer to “ubiquitous” as the capability to adapt to, and therefore exist in diverse contexts, and “multi-domain” as the capability of training using data from multiple domains.

The use of mobile devices is growing in the different daily activities, and its use started in young people, but elderly people is now using this type of devices. Technological equipment are widely improving and they include different sensors, which can acquire different physical and physiological data. The development of these systems is included in the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) technologies for wellbeing. The e-Health and m-Health solutions may not act only in the treatment and monitoring stages of different diseases, but it can act as preventive, promoting healthy lifestyles with the equipment that causes bad habits. These solutions can cooperate between them, health the people to live better, but the most important subject is the healthcare that will not start only at the hospital, but it starts in the home.

Even though computing devices are becoming more powerful with new technological advances, they can hardly keep up with resource-hungry applications that require large amounts of CPU power, memory and battery. Computation offloading can help to augment the computational capabilities beyond the boundaries of a local device by distributing the workload to remote computing resources. However, as soon as a task leaves the local device, it is exposed to varying network conditions and is likely to face a heterogeneous resource pool. Mobile cloud computing (MCC) was introduced to provide reliable computing power at scale in a pay-per-use manner. Despite all its advantages, MCC might bring along considerable network latencies, deployment costs, and privacy concerns. Mobile edge computing (MEC) can be considered an alternative to MCC as it makes use of distributed edge servers in proximity which reduces communication latencies and enhances privacy. Ad-hoc computing makes opportunistic use of sporadically available resources which might even be unreliable end-user devices. This paradigm facilitates a better resource utilization, new resource sharing opportunities, and highly decentralized architectures but introduces a new level of complexity in terms of resource management, scheduling decisions, and fault tolerance.

The Mobiquitous 2021 Posters and Demos track complements the paper tracks of the conference by offering an opportunity to present late-breaking research results, ongoing research, and early-stage research speculative or innovative work in progress.
