******************************************************

A postdoc and a PhD positions are available at the Institute
of Computer Science (ICS), Foundation for Research and
Technology-Hellas (FORTH), Heraklion, Crete Island, Greece.
These positions are funded by an excellence grant approved
by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation.

The duration of the appointment for the postdoc researcher
is 18 months (maximum) and for the PhD student 3 years.
Postdoc applications for smaller periods will also be considered.

The PhD applicant will have to follow the PhD mechanisms of
the Department of Computer Science of the University of Crete,
one of the top universities in Greece (see http://www.csd.uoc.gr
and http://www.uoc.gr/ for more information on the Department
of Computer Science and the University of Crete, respectively).

The positions will be open until appropriate candidates are found.

RESEARCH TOPIC
----------------------
We are looking for two highly motivated applicants with a strong
expertise in concurrent and distributed algorithms and data
structures. In particular, the project focuses on building the
theoretical underpinning for non-volatile memory computing
and on designing recoverable algorithms.

Next generation computer systems will rely on emerging memory
technologies, such as Non-Volatile Main Memory (NVMM), to
address the high computational demands of modern applications
and provide persistence. One research goal of the project is to
build the theoretical underpinning for NVMM-based computing.
Specifically, the project aspires to develop a sound theoretical
framework that will facilitate the review of algorithmic techniques
for NVMM-based concurrent computing in a unified way.
The project will also focus on designing fundamental
synchronization primitives, and essential concurrent data
structures and algorithms, including indexing structures for
big data, and in particular of data series analytics, whose
execution will be recoverable at no significant cost.

FORTH ICS & UNIVERSITY OF CRETE
----------------------------------------------
The Institute of Computer Science (FORTH ICS) is one of the
leading research centres in Greece with well-organized facilities
and highly qualified staff. It has an internationally acknowledged
reputation in conducting basic and applied research, developing
applications and products, and providing services. FORTH ICS has
strong international collaborations, and has formed several
alliances with industrial partners both inside Greece and
internationally.

The Institute of Computer Science is located at the relatively-new,
modern building of FORTH which provides all required infrastructure.

THE ISLAND OF CRETE
-----------------------------
Living in Crete, the biggest (and one of the most beautiful) island
in Greece, can become an exciting experience. Crete is a multicolored
mosaic of mythology, history, culture, friendly and proud people,
rough and stony mountains, gorges, the always bright cretan sun
and the deep sea that surrounds the island. In addition to the
facilities offered by its big cities, one can really enjoy the
beauty of the landscape and the mountains.
