Innovations and Opportunities in Liberal Arts Computing Education

This Pre-Symposium event will promote connection and collaboration within the liberal arts computing community. This full day event will be split into two sessions. The morning session will focus on innovations in computing education in the liberal arts and will include both a panel presenting selected exemplar curricular innovations and then breakout sessions organized around the particular topics and challenges raised by the panelists. The afternoon session will be run in an unconference format allowing participants to select a topic of interest and then participate in small working groups to explore that topic and produce deliverables to be shared back with the community. Additional proposals for unconference sessions are still welcome.

This is an in-person event affiliated with the SIGCSE 2022 Technical Symposium and sponsored by the SIGCSE Committee on Computing Education in Liberal Arts Colleges. Attendees must register for the Technical Symposium and then additionally register for this event using the link above. There is no additional fee for this event.

A hybrid follow-up event building on these sessions will be held on Friday, April 1st and will be open to any interested attendee whether they have attended this SIGCSE event or not. More information about this hybrid event will be posted on the event site in early March.

Panelists and topics will be posted to the event agenda following acceptance notifications. A preview of the submitted materials can be reviewed on the event Resulting Materials page.

Curricular Innovations breakout sessions

Breakout sessions will begin by being organized around the topics presented by the panelists. However, discussions in each session will provide opportunities for discussion and ideation of ongoing or potential innovations at the participants’ institutions.

Selection of Unconference sessions

A list of proposed unconference sessions is available on the event Resulting Materials page; additions to this list will be accepted up until the time of the event and participants will be reminded of the link to this information prior to the lunch break. Upon return from lunch, attendees interact with session organizers and indicate interest in various sessions and a set will be chosen to proceed for the remainder of the afternoon.

Unconference sessions

Selected sessions will gather and session leaders will follow their provided plan for An announcement will be made encouraging groups to take a break at the midpoint of the session, but individual sessions will have flexibility to divide up this time in the manner that best suits their topic and intended collaboration.

Business meeting

The SIGCSE Committee on Computing Education in Liberal Arts College will hold a business meeting open to any attendees who wish to participate. Topics will include planning for the April 1st hybrid CCSC-NE session, identifying new priorities for the Liberal Arts Computing community, and collecting feedback and ideas for future activities. The Committee is always looking for members interested in leading events and welcomes attendees who want to find ways to get more involved.
