Hello all,

My name is Bart Van Roey, and as Keith told you a while ago, I'll be
joining the Webchi list with my list Webui, and I will be co-moderating the
new list with Keith.

In this message I'll briefly introduce myself. As you will find out,
English is not my native language, so I hope you'll forgive me my writing
errors.

I'm happy to join the list, and wish us all very good messages ;-)

Bart

.................

I'm living in Brussels (Belgium) where I am a freelance consultant in HCI.
I started 4 years ago on an UI design and UI testing project at Generale
Bank (the largest bank in Belgium).

Early 95 I decided to focus on the interface issues of the Internet. But
before designing interfaces myself, I needed to learn as much as possible
about the technology of the net, and the users of it. So I decided to do
two things: give training and give technical support, both fabulous ways to
learn technology and use.

In the summer of 95 I started Internet training at Elsevier (I still do
that from time to time) and from December 95 to December 96 I worked as
customer support at Arcadis, a local ISP in Belgium.

I created the webui-list in June last year as a spin off of a usability
meeting organized by several European projects. Almost all the subscribers
are from European community computer projects.

By the end of last year, I started looking for Internet user interface
design jobs. I went to Boston and New York for one month (it's a dream of
mine to work there for a while). But I found little interest (or money)
available for user interface design for web sites, let alone as a full time
occupation. And if interest would exist, immigration (I don't have a green
card yet) would be a step most companies wouldn't want to take.

When I came back home, a fax from Generale Bank was waiting for me with an
invitation to work at their site... as an internet user interface designer.
This keeps me busy all week, but I still find time to do some Internet
training (I love training), in-class and on-line. I write articles about
Internet user interface design in Inside Internet (a Belgian Internet
magazine).

My academic background is a Masters degree in Organizational Psychology
(Leuven, 1992, Dutch) and a MBA (Brussels, 1994, French).

I was present at CHI'95 in Denver, and CSCW'96 in Boston and will go to
DIS'97 in Amsterdam and ECSCW'97 in Lancaster. I'll try to go to CHI 97,
but I'll probably won't make it.

I'm member of SIGCHI (I love the magazine interactions), the Usability
Professionals Association and Team IT (the UK forum for Computer Supported
Collaborative Working).

Latest books I've been reading: Creating Killer Web Sites (David Siegel) and
Designing Large Scale Web Sites (Darrell Sand).

Latest articles I've been writing: "Frames, one year birthday" (when & why
not to use) and "Styleguides, guidelines for good design".

Thank you for reading until the end, and mail me at [log in to unmask] if you
have any questions or ideas for a thread you don't dare to start yourself...

Regards, Bart
