ABSTRACT: This presentation will explore Colbert's Object-Oriented Software
Development method (OOSD) and its support for Ada, including Ada 95.  OOSD
focuses on the objects of a problem throughout development, and is
particularly compatible with Ada.  OOSD has been praised for addressing
real-time issues, for quickly communicating the information developed
during analysis and design, and for allowing exceptionally high re-use of
both design representation and code.  It has been applied to a variety of
systems, including command & communication, flight software, business
information, and simulations, and has been used for system engineering and
enterprise modeling. NASA Langley Research Center recently put on the Web a
Software Engineering Process Guide using OOSD (URL
http://sw-eng.LaRC.NASA.gov/guidebook/index.htm).

KEY CONCEPTS:
OOSD seeks to identify the objects in a problem, to understand the
structural and behavioral modularity and operational characteristics of
each object, and to recognize objects which are members of a common class
and so share properties, treating the system itself as an object.

OOSD's early focus on objects generates a model of the system that is
effective for analysis (validation & verification) and communication among
developers, customers, management, and quality-assurance personnel.  The
model is unusually consistent, closely follows the "real world", can be
tested early, and is easy to modify and re-use.  A particularly thorough
verification procedure establishes that the system is correctly implemented
and achieves the required properties.

OOSD is founded on Ada concepts.  It models concurrency based on Ada
tasking, and includes a notation for modeling objects and their
interactions that supports analysis of deadlock and race conditions, a
Harel-based behavior description that integrates the functional and dynamic
models characteristic of other methods, and, based on work by Tom Gilb,
forms to capture and analyze the operational characteristics of an object.
OOSD also supports mathematical analysis of scheduling.

Speaker Brief Biography:
Ed Colbert is President of Absolute Software Co., Inc.
Ed has been teaching object-oriented methods and software
engineering since 1982.  He is currently consulting on applying
object-oriented methods to projects with TRW, Pulinco AG, and Honeywell.
 He created the Object-Oriented Software Development method, which supports
analysis and design for implementation in languages such as Ada, C++, and
SmallTalk.

He is the chair of the newly formed Patterns Working Group of
the ACM Special Interest Group on Ada (SIGAda), and was recently the SIGAda
Vice-Chair for Liaison (Spring 1997 and 1989-95) and Ada Awareness Manager
(1995-97).  Ed has recently delivered presentations at Ada Europe (England,
1997), TRI-Ada (Los Angeles, 1996 & '95), Ada UK (London, 1995), UNICOM
(England, 1993), OOPSLA (Washington, D.C., 1993), ObjectExpo (New York,
1993), ObjectExpo-Europe (England, 1992), LOOK (Denmark, 1992), OOP
(Germany, 1992), and SCOOP-Europe (England, 1991).  He is a graduate of the
University of Michigan (M.S. Computer & Communication Sciences, 1981; B.S.
(honors) Chemistry and Biology, 1979).
