Special issue of the International Journal of HCI: Empirical Evaluation of Information Visualisations Call For Papers: http://www.brunel.ac.uk/~cssrccc2/cfp/ijhcs.html Special Issue Overview: Throughout 1990s, we have witnessed the ever-growing interest and fast-advancing technologies in the field of information visualisation. This field has captured the imagination of researchers and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines all over the world. More and more sophisticated, wide-ranging information visualisation techniques are finding their way into our life in the information society. The widespread proliferation of information visualisation techniques has also highlighted the need for principles and methodologies for empirical evaluation of these techniques. Sorely needed are improved methods in areas such as task analysis, usability evaluation, and usage analysis, with special emphasis on information visualisation-intrinsic user interfaces. This special issue aims to provide a timely and unifying forum for researchers and practitioners to tackle some of the fundamental and practical issues concerning empirical evaluation of information visualisation. The guest editors would like to solicit original papers on topics related to this theme. Some examples of possible topics are as follows: * requirements engineering for information visualisation-intensive interfaces * task analysis with 2D/3D spatial user interfaces * effects of visual user interfaces * surveys and meta-analyses of usability studies in information viusalisation * user-centred design for visualisation, animation, and virtual reality * learning and knowledge management with information visualisation * individual differences in information visualisation usage * cognitive abilities and behavioural analysis * user preference and satisfaction * collaborative work with information visualisation * usage patterns, strategies, and heuristics * usability studies * evaluation methodologies and theories for information visualisation design Authors are encouraged to contact guest editors to discuss the suitability of their topics to the special issue. Please consult the Instruction for Authors at the IJHCI website http://www.academicpress.com/www/journal/hc/hcifa.htm for more information on preparing a manuscript for IJHCS. Important Dates: January 31, 2000 Full papers due March 15, 2000 Notification of Acceptance May 1, 2000 Final revisions due Oct, 2000 Publication Prospective authors are encouraged to email guest editors to express their intention to submit a paper for this special issue. All submissions will be reviewed by a review panel according to the usual standards of IJHCS. Electronic submission is strongly encouraged and should be made if possible. Acceptable formats include PDF and MS Word (97 or later versions). If you use other formats, please contact a guest editor in advance.
